4m CW: Conditions about the same as last year. There would have been no operation at all if it hadn't been for the matchstick holding a fuseholder together.
4m SSB: Openings to the South but poor to the North. Next year we'll take a hairdryer to combat HT flashover on damp Sunday mornings!
2m: RF Technology hasn't improved but catering is coming on in leaps and bounds. Microwave, BarBQ, water boiler, toaster - What more could a body want?
70cm: Very flat (Picked up during night)
23cm : Transverter receive failed so another converter & 2m I/F
was used with a 1/4 wave bit of wire. Much trouble matching the two!
About 10 man hours of effort per contact but we got 2 more than last year!

4m CW: Maybe we should have tried the station beforehand? This was another candidate for an in-flight rebuild - Lots of downtime and a late start.
4m SSB: Last 2 hours were very slow going.
2m: Station had a major rebuild over about 2 hours after poor reports were received. Dupe of the year award to G7HOA/P who we worked 4 times on 2m and 3 times on 70cm !!
70cm: This station had a major equipment improvement for 1998 with the inclusion of a gas barBQ. Without doubt the most impressive technical advance of recent years. (Quoted in RadCom!) We took the pre-amp but forgot to fit it.
23cm: Worked almost all we could hear - rapid QSB.
Antennas only dropped once.
We tried to get 4 55ele Tonnas but left it too late and there were no more in the country, hence running with 3x55 & 1x23! It was only while building the antennas on the Yeld we realised that with the feed points equidistant there was nothing to physically attach the 23 ele to. It's nose was behind the H-frame! The station ran all weekend with a lashed on broom handle.

4m CW: Maybe we should have tried the station beforehand?
Lots of downtime: A late start and early finish. FT101 RIP !
Really, really, really need to get some more CW ops trained up for
next year!
4m SSB: All time best DX and he called us!
We QSY'd and left him to the pile up.
2m: Linear was taken to bits in the middle of the night to cure
dry joints in the PTT switching. Had it in bits last year for
different reasons!
70cm: Remembered to take and fit the preamp after 3 years trying.
23cm: Big stations calling CW early on were a clue to the conditions!
14 QSOs with 4x55 ele - Hmmm, that's 15 elements per contact!
But at least the station was in the food tent.

6m: Hours of happy fun! An average distance per QSO of 1260Km
with a little station just has to put a smile on your face!
4m: Quiet compared to previous years.
2m: Best ever! Weather abominable but operation brilliant -
a string of 2000k contacts. First time 2m linear didn't need
rebuilding during the night.
70cm: Nothing special but we did somehow beat 9 out of 10 years
results of the last decade. Weather - Usual summer downpour for
dismantling at the end.

6m: Nothing spectacular. Weather - Hot. Our newly licenced M1 commented of his first contest: "Pointless and futile... but good fun"!
4m: Quiet compared to previous years. There was a Chiff Chaff singing from our 4m & 6m antennas all through the light hours. Us providing a decent perch clearly made his weekend! I believe he's booked us for next year.
2m: Well it could have been quite good if we'd got both driven elements on the same way up! Of course it was 00:30 and pitch dark when we realised and not enough people around to do anything about it.

4m: Where were the EI boys this year and who had all the E's because they certainly weren't here? No S51s for us!
2m: A new site with much more room to put up the antennas. No unwanted visitors and a friendly farmer. Great food, nice weather and a view - What more could we ask for!

6m: Sunburn at 20:00 was a very welcome problem. Local rabbit lampers provided a few minutes consternation when they shone their high power LED array onto the site.
Generator ran out of fuel 45 mins from the end - that will teach us not to run so many high power stations and the hot water urn.
4m: This year we had a tea urn constantly on the boil - providing a dummy load for the generator output in the wee small hours and refreshment for the operators.
Great fun using the computer logging programs. Not quite enough practice took place before hand though and left a bit of a nightmare to sort out afterwards because some index numbers were not issued because of finger trouble.
VHF NFD coincided with the Live8 concerts. After dark, from our vantage point we were treated to a firework display which was most impressive. (Those watching didn't tell the operators of course...)
2m: A single error was made when the 2m mast was almost fully raised and control of the head lost momentarily. The bend transferred itself from the top to the bottom section where it put a permanent bend in the tubing before the situation was stabilised. There followed a good piece of teamwork as the mast was straightened as far as possible and lowered using an extra-long gin pole. Miraculously the new antenna on top was completely unharmed. We had to make do with a 40 foot backup mast put together from poles scavenged from 23cm.
Admittedly during the pre-contest pep talk the phrase 'bent on success' was used, but it really wasn't meant literally. I guess we need to get this straight next for next year.
In equal measure the Good site, Aerial, conditions and extra power increased our range considerably but it did mean that the operating team had to stay awake all night.
23cm: Relocated mast (to 2m agl) below summit of hill giving a vast improvement over 15m mast at summit in full view of s9 noise source (telecoms mast about 5 miles away.)
Late starting as 23cm mast was stolen to assist the repair of the 2 mtr mast which went up then came down!
Quick lift on Sunday enabled us to bag a PA0. Found that low noise more important on 23 cm than antenna height.

As is traditional I'm sure we stand no chance of winning anything but we did have a great weekend
out in the sunshine, with good food and lots of fine people to talk to.

2m: Missing mic preamp meant we were largely down on power despite the capabilities of the linear.

I don't suppose we'll be the only group to say that it wasn't the best of weekends for DX, but it could have rained a great deal more than it did and we did have a good time. Until a couple of days before the contest we didn't have a contest site at all so we're pretty lucky really!
6m: Rolls Royce set up on remould tyres! The original 6 ele antenna had its feed point N Type socket break (bad design) so we had to fall back on an old 3 ele which couldn't take the power available from the linear.
Conditions good at start of contest then petered out. All rather disappointing really. Problems at the start, problems with the generator and an early finish combined with a flat band didn't make it one of the best.
2m: Catalog of problems this weekend. Site affected by weather so farmer only able to cut the bottom field for us therefore space was restricted and lower height ASL than normal.
The lower height put us in too close proximity to a house so the power had to be reduced to avoid TVI.
The generator failed a couple of times so we decided to finish early to get the tents in dry at which point we got severely rained on. And the band was flat. Apart from that it was a great weekend.
Note: One of our ops turned over two log sheets which is why there are no QSOs with indexes 26-50! SDV just can't cope with this.
70cm: Generator failed! Where were people hiding?
23cm: This is not a microwave site!

I don't suppose we'll be the only group to say that it wasn't the best of weekends for DX, but it could have rained a great deal more than it did and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
6m: The equipment was a joy to use although the band conditions were very changeable. We struggled to work a weak Scottish station and within seconds of finishing an Icelandic station blew our eardrums in with a huge signal. For next year we need a bigger turning bar on the mast - The windage on 2 antennas made them hard to control in the wind.
2m: 2m was very hard work this year. The sporadic E was very sporadic and thanks to my early morning slow wittedness 9A5Y got away! S9+ rain static at times. They guys working late on Friday night laying out masts made a huge difference and we were actually on air on all bands before the contest started. There can't be many other years in the last 30 we've managed that!
